What is the Texas sales tax?

The state of Texas imposes a relatively average state-wide sales tax at a mandated 6.25% sales tax rate. There is a bit more, though as the state of Texas also allows for local counties, districts, as well as certain businesses the freedom to tack on extra percentages of a sales tax to go along with the mandated 6.25%. These extra percentages cannot exceed 2% so the cap for Texas' state-wide sales tax rate is 8.25%. That cap would make Texas' rate relatively higher than the average state. But since Texas is such a big state with millions of people, a higher, but flexible sales tax rate is necessary.
